To Get to That Place

By Lynn Hoggard

--

To get to that place past easy words
that fall to the floor, look back
at you, dead-eyed,

To get to that place where the flesh
feels tender, just shy of pain,
where you balance truth with suffering,

To get to that place where many won’t go —
transfixed at the threshold —
frightened by vulnerability and danger,

To get to that place where you gasp
and start to cry because there, there,
you ache all over with feeling,

To get there
you sacrifice comfort and illusion
to sit alone, rich with emptiness.
